Diallel Analysis for Lycopene Content in the Hybrids Derived from Different Colored Parents in Tomato
نویسندگان
چکیده
Lycopene is a red pigment in tomato with purported antioxidant properties. As the amount of lycopene has been reported to differ in different colored tomatoes or even absent in non-red tomatoes, the objective of this study was to investigate the inheritance of lycopene content and the color parameters of hybrids using a 10 parent diallel excluding reciprocals. Parents differed in general combining ability (GCA) for lycopene and color parameters. “Chocolate Stripe” (purple and brown striped) had the highest lycopene content followed by NC 1CS (red colored with the crimson gene) with the best general combining ability among parental lines. Hybrids differed in lycopene content and color parameters across two summer and greenhouse experiments, with no interaction between experiments indicating that the lycopene content was consistent. Narrow-sense heritability for lycopene was only 9% whereas broad-sense heritability was estimated to be 25%. The order of dominance for lycopene content was found as purple-brown > red > blue > yellow > green. Heritability estimates for color parameters were close to those for lycopene. This information may be useful in developing specialty type tomatoes or increasing lycopene content in tomatoes.

Genetic analysis of seed yield and oil content in safflower using F1 and F2 progenies of diallel crosses
Improvement of seed yield and oil content in safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) as an oilseed crop is the main objective of its breeding programs. However, little genetic information is available for these traits. The main objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for seed yield and oil content. Six safflower lines each derived from different Iranian local populations and Saff...
متن کاملGenetic analysis of grain yield, days to flowering and maturity in oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) using diallel crosses
Twenty one F2 progenies derived from a 7×7 diallel crosses along with parents were evaluated for grain yield, flowering and maturity time. Due to significant genotypic effects for all traits, genetic analyses were performed on F2 progenies including analyses of combining ability and genetic components. The Analysis of variance revealed that both additive and non-additive genetic effects were in...
متن کاملInheritance of Beta Carotene Content in the Wild Tomato Species Lycoporsicon cheesmanii
Beta carotene and lycopene, the two principal colored carotenoids present in tomato fruit, were measured in mature fruit of parental, F,, F2, and backcross populations derived from an initial cross of an orange-fruited accession of the wild tomato species Lycopersicon cheesmann Riley with the cultivated tomato L esculentum Mill. Segregation patterns for fruit pigmentation and percentage beta ca...
متن کاملGenetic analysis of Biochemical and Physiological Traits using Haymen’s Graphical Approach in Lines and F2 Progenies of Maize (Zea mays L.)
The diallel mating design is an important tool used by plant breeding programs to obtain information on trait inheritance. Knowledge of gene action, heritability and genetic advance from selection is a prerequisite for starting a breeding program for developing varieties of maize. Five maize S7 lines and their F2 progenies were studied in a 5 × 5 half-diallel crossing design to evaluate the gen...
متن کاملDiverse postharvest responses of tomato fruits at different maturity stages to hot water treatment
Sensitivity of tomato fruits to chilling injury limits its storage and marketability. This study investigated the effect of hot water treatment (HWT) on reducing the consequences of chilling injury (CI) with respect to quality attributes of tomatoes during storage. Tomatoes were harvested at three ripening stages: mature green, pink, and red; dipped in hot water at 45°C for 15 min; and stored a...
